The interplay between demographic change and productivity is increasingly an issue in countries where the proportion of older age groups are growing. This chapter explores the mismatch between microeconometric and macroeconometric evidence, where the former finds a negative association between the share of the older population and growth, and the latter do not find a negative effect of age on productivity. The chapter highlights the need to consider the link between productivity and age in a broader context, advocating a multidimensional analysis and identifying several areas for further research.
