Having emerged less than twenty years ago, mobile research methods are a recent addition to the toolkit of social scientists. While drawing on the quickly expanding international literature, the chapter discusses the origins and main characteristics of this innovative approach to data collection. It will familiarize scholars in education and other disciplines with examples, important considerations, as well as the strengths and limitations of using mobile methods in field-based research.
