We discuss several key issues of subject recruitment for economic experiments: research ethics, sample size planning, recruitment selection bias, and subject pool management. First, we explore the history of human subjects research ethics and the application of ethical principles to economic experiments. Second, we discuss importance and tools to determine necessary sample sizes in advance in order to balance power, error probabilities, and experimenter budget, taking a short recourse into the basics of null hypothesis testing. Third, we consider evidence for recruitment selection bias, at which stages this selection may be effective, and how to possibly overcome such bias. Fourth, for different types of human subjects, we discuss recruitment issues and tools to manage these subject pools. We conclude with practical recommendations for ethically correct, selection-bias minimizing, and efficient recruitment procedures.
