Captivated by the success of well-known university-derived companies, nations around the world have implemented policies to encourage and support academic entrepreneurship. However, as Kenney points out, the study of university-derived entrepreneurship suffers from vexing methodological issues that have limited our understanding of these phenomena. Addressing these issues may help policymakers better enable university-derived entrepreneurship and thus improve regional economic development.
