Michel Vandenbroeck and Katrien Van Laere

The chapter analyses the conceptualization of care and education by professionals and parents in Belgium, making use of video-elicited focus groups, and suggests that the increasing focus on early learning (sometimes labelled the schoolification of early childhood education) leads to the subordination of care. This hierarchical conception of education as more important than care may lead to the deliberate non-take up of early childhood education and care by families and thus paradoxically widen the educational gap that it wanted to bridge.
