Neither event organizers nor scholars involved in event management research can ignore the importance of event safety, which concerns not only the performing artists, athletes and the like, but also those who attend various events, whether they are called guests, audiences, spectators or crowds. Here the focus is on the safety of the people attending events, particularly in the context of leisure industries, such as sports, music and culture, but also in relation to religious mass gatherings. The chapter begins with a brief overview of the historical traces of event safety research and continues with the review of research topics currently dominating the field of event safety research. Finally, the chapter identifies a set of emerging event safety research topics and offers suggestions on how these research topics can be addressed.
