This chapter introduces the recent debates on statebuilding and intervention. It first demonstrates how the concepts of intervention and statebuilding are interconnected. It then discusses the mainstream, neo-Weberian approach to statebuilding, and introduces alternative research avenues that challenge the mainstream approaches to statebuilding. Finally, this chapter introduces the main themes developed in the Handbook, connecting the different contributions together.
