Oliver S. Crocco

This chapter describes the author’s journey from graduate student to his first academic job. Written with the aim of offering students a sliver of support in attaining their own first position in academia, it begins with the advice to be aware of the countless variables that may affect the process and to focus on those things within your control. The author also recognizes his positionality. The journey from graduate student to jobholder is then described, starting with connecting with the telos of the job and preparing for the academic job market. Reflections on emerging scholarly identity are provided too, followed by guidance on creating an online presence and assembling job documents in readiness for making applications. There’s also advice on publications and teaching, and finally the author’s own recollections of his phone interview, campus visit, and offer. The chapter concludes with a few key lessons by way of summary.
