Abstract This chapter provides an overview of the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty (Madrid Protocol) and examines its role in environmental protection within the region. It provides detail on the Protocol’s background and role within the wider Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) and in particular its role within the Treaty System. The chapter pays particular attention to the Protocol’s two main elements, the moratorium on mineral exploration and the role and function of its five annexes. These approaches, as well as the role of the Protocol within the ATS, are also critically explored and areas of future development are examined.
