The Masungi Georeserve is a karst conservation project located an hour and a half away from the dense capital of Metro Manila on the island of Luzon, the Philippines. With illegal logging being prevalent in the area in the 1990s, and with no specific surface karst protection laws in the country, the area underwent restoration for over two decades starting in 1996. Key challenges that were encountered included professional squatting, illegal logging, and quarrying interests. To ensure the sustainability of the initiative, Masungi Georeserve opened to the public in December 2015. Today the reserve brings together concepts in geotourism/geoparks, conservation development and private land conservation to encourage sustainable man–nature interactions in tourism.
