This contribution covers the increasing engagement of the European Union and its Member States at the International Labour Organisation bodies and the results of such engagement on ILO policies and standards. It reviews the multifaceted interplay between ILO standards and frameworks on the one hand, and EU law and policies on the other. It also provides illustration of the cooperation between the EU and the ILO to promote decent work within the EU, in third countries and at a global level. It concludes that this cooperation is intensive, comprehensive and result-oriented. However, there is an important gap between the EU’s institutional standing at the ILO - as an international organization with observer status - and the EU’s real role within the ILO. The contribution is written by officials directly involved in coordination of EU–ILO relations and focuses on the period 2012–17.
