This chapter examines some of what is known about the interplay between structure and agency from experiments. It focuses on aspects of social identity and the influence of contextual governance arrangements in individual decision making. The experiments provide insights into important contemporary explanatory debates around diversity and solidarity, the prospects for redistributive politics and the possible ‘death of democracy’. They also point to an important issue in prescriptive political economy: should recommendations apply to procedures or outcomes?
