Boards of directors need to be understood as a context-bound phenomenon that requires careful attention to many different meanings and interpretations of the context. The latter is not only about the situational trajectories in which boards are created and evolve, but it also calls for many disciplines’ theoretical lenses that would offer a holistic apprehension on boards. In this introductory chapter of the Research Handbook on Board of Directors, we discuss issues related to this challenge when researching boards of directors, before presenting the different chapters that constitute the core of this volume.
