Since the founding of the socialist regime in 1949, China's family planning policies have undergone tremendous changes due to its drastic political, economic and social changes. China's family planning policies can be divided into 3 stages and 9 sub-stages in terms of its scope and rigidness: the pre-family planning stage, the family planning stage and the later-family planning stage. In line with its changing family planning policies, the total fertility rate has dropped radically from over 6 in 1949 to the below replacement level in early 1990s and then continued its downward trend. Drawing on literature review and China's national population statistics, this chapter aims to analyze China's family planning policies and fertility changes in a dynamic context and from a historical perspective.
