This chapter develops a conceptual framework of responsible careers and their impact on societal issues. Responsible careers form a subset of responsible management fields and underpin the maintenance and transformation of their institutional infrastructure. While responsible management describes managers’ integration of ethics, social responsibility and sustainability into the everyday practices associated with their role, responsible careers describe careers where the person integrates service to society and having an impact on social and environmental issues into their career-related meaning-making, including employment and role choices and strategic approaches to work. The conceptual model comprises seven dynamics of responsible careers – moving through time and space, co-creating careers, matching individual and organizational needs, bridging legitimacy and resistance, making meaning of career transitions, making meaning of agency, and making meaning of tensions. The model proposes that the relationship between individuals’ responsible careers and their impact on social and environmental issues is mediated by individual change work, organizations’ responsible management work and field-level responsible management work. The implications for our understanding of responsible management are discussed.
