Sybil Geldart and Christine Alksnis

The chapter begins with some general background on occupational health and safety research, and a description of the safety culture construct. Next, the authors examine contemporary research examining the assessment of safety culture and the value of transformational leadership skills in one large sub-area of the public sector – health care. They then explore new directions in creating a positive work environment more broadly across work settings, or what has been coined a psychologically healthy workplace by the American Psychological Association (APA). Based on initiatives from Canada and the United States, the chapter ends with a few practical suggestions and resources for employers so that they may build an effective health and safety culture.
