Since 2002, a ‘Day of Geosites’ has occurred every year in all parts of Germany. The activity engages the general public in regard to a wide range of insights into the history of Earth and its evolution. Supervised by major geoscientific societies and coordinated by the geological surveys of the Federal States the activity is realized by a multitude of independent stakeholders. General guidelines, information posters and web-based databases are provided by the supervising institutions. After approval by the respective geological survey each group may arrange and perform their own projects. The ‘Day of Geosites’ experience, which has occurred over the last 15 years has been successful. Today annually around 350 actions are carried out covering a wide range of different geoscientific issues. Designated as an effective way to improve an interest in the Earth sciences and stimulate responsibility for geo-heritage the activity serves as firm fundament for sustainable geo-tourism and should be adopted by more countries.
