Hundreds of incubators and accelerators have been established all over the world since the 1960s in an attempt to accelerate the growth and success of startup companies. Ghosal describes the operational and conceptual differences between incubators and accelerators, reviewing the modest literature related to their impact. While these organizations are generally believed to have a positive effect on entrepreneurial development, much work remains to understand their structure, role and efficacy—and how this informs theory and policy.
