Cornelis Eldering and Willem Hulsink

Chapter 9 articulates European Space Agency’s (ESA) efforts to commercialize market-proven applications for use by none-space business organizations outside ESA, while the start-up entrepreneurs who apply the technologies are not sourced by ESA itself, but come from a variety of backgrounds, i.e. external entrepreneurs, and consultants. The authors explore the history, lessons learned and guiding principles that have shaped the basis of the ESA BIC approach of managing 20 incubators in 60 locations across Europe with same operational procedures. They focus on local entrepreneurs and their resources which are part of a regional economic development strategy and are operated by local partners.
