Günther Schmid celebrates his 60th birthday on 14 March 2002. This book is dedicated to him in two regards: First, it honours his academic achievements as a social scientist and labour market researcher. Secondly, it is an expression of respect for, and gratitude towards, a conscientious colleague and department head. In three decades of uninterrupted research work, which took on a strong international dimension in the 1990s, Günther Schmid has acquired a reputation as an excellent researcher. In the cut and thrust of intellectual debate, he has always displayed great inquisitiveness about rival ideas, not only as a stimulus for but also as a check on his own thinking. This amicable approach to intellectual debate cannot always be taken for granted in a competitive professional environment. He also shows the same intellectual curiosity, combined with a demanding yet encouraging attitude, in his dealings with young academics and his students. Günther Schmid has worked at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB) since 1974. After working as a research fellow in the International Institute for Management and Administration, he served as deputy director from 1979 to 1988 and in 1989 became director of the Labour Market Policy and Employment Research Unit, a post he still holds today. As one of WZB’s founding generation, Günther’s career as a labour market researcher is closely linked to this institution.
