The labour force transitions of firsttime mothers in Britain, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden Siv Gustafsson, Eiko Kenjoh and Cécile Wetzels A PERSONAL NOTE BY SIV GUSTAFSSON In 1981 Günther Schmid invited me to take part in an international project on sex discrimination and equal opportunities that he was leading from Berlin. It was my first international project, my first visit to Berlin and my first encounter with Günther and his work. The results of this project were published in a book entitled The Labour Market and Employment Policy (Schmid and Weitzel, 1984). Günther later invited me to be a visiting scholar at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin in 1985 and again in 1986, each time for a period of two months. These visits to Berlin, which have been followed by many others, enabled me to follow the city’s development from the time when it was still a divided city, when everyone I met, including Günther, said: ‘I do not feel locked in’, to Bill Clinton’s visit to the reopened Brandenburger Tor and the wrapping of the Reichstag by the American conceptual artist Christo. Günther managed to schedule the two meetings for the project that led to the publication of the International Handbook of Labour Market Policy and Evaluation (Schmid et al., 1996) to coincide with these two historic events.
