8. Services internationalization: characteristics, potentials and barriers of Danish services firms Anders Henten and Torben Vad INTRODUCTION There is, unfortunately, little statistical material on the internationalization of services. International trade and investment statistics on services are scarce1 and it was therefore positively received when the Danish Ministry of Industry in autumn 2000 commissioned a study on the internationalization of Danish service industries. The present chapter is based on the results of this study.2 The motivation of the Ministry of Industry for commissioning such a study was primarily the new round of WTO (World Trade Organisation) negotiations in relation to which the Ministry sought to gain improved knowledge on the actual potentials and barriers regarding the internationalization of services when involved in international negotiations. Secondly, Denmark witnessed a decrease, larger than the Western European average, in its share of international trade in services during most of the 1990s. However, in 1998–2000, the Danish share had risen again, which was mainly attributable to a sizeable increase in the export of sea transport services.3 The Ministry also wanted to gain more knowledge concerning the possible reasons for these developments. For this purpose, questions regarding the characteristics, potentials and barriers with respect to the sale of services nationally and internationally were put to approximately 1600 Danish companies in a questionnaire survey. The present chapter concentrates on the characteristics of services and the perceived barriers to internationalization.
