Chapter 5: Economics, ecology and GMOs: sustainability, precaution and related issues

Clem Tisdell

Extract

Decisions about the development and introduction of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) usually have to be made in circumstances where their economic and ecological consequences are very uncertain. Furthermore, these decisions must be made in a holistic context requiring simultaneous consideration of economic, ecological, social, political and other factors. Both the uncertainty and the wide range of factors that need to be taken into account in assessing the consequences of the introduction of GMOs for sustainable development make sustainable development planning challenging in this case. The development of GMOs has generated both high expectations about their ability to increase economic production and help reduce economic scarcity as well as dire predictions about how they might reduce biodiversity, add to health risks and, in the long term, threaten economic sustainability.
