The spatial dimension of sustainability is generating increasing interest from both scientific and social perspectives. Land-use changes towards urban and other intensive uses constitute one of the dimensions of global change linking the local, regional and global levels. Although the loss of natural ecosystems has been the main concern, the disappearance of traditional agro systems and cultural landscapes as a consequence of urban sprawl and growth of infrastructures is receiving increasing attention (González Jácome, 1993; Meeus, 1995; Paoletti, 1995; Vos and Meekes, 1999; Schmitz et al., 2003; Celikyay et al., 2007; Fernald et al., 2007; Petanidou et al., 2008; Fang and Liu, 2008; Picazo- Tadeo et al., 2009). Traditional irrigated lands constitute a characteristic Mediterranean agro-landscape, called huertas, developed in areas with available water, especially in lowlands along the main river valleys.
