Sustainability Management Systems – Two Case Studies Jane Scanlon, Hudson Worsley and Neil Earnshaw 12.1 12.1.1 Aim and Background Contribution to this Book This chapter links to Chapter 11, which defines sustainability in the context of delivering projects in the built environment. It also promotes the use of sustainability management systems (SMSs) across the life of a project and provides a high-level model for the development of an SMS. SMSs can ensure sustainability issues, and risks and opportunities, are meaningfully addressed during various project delivery activities. These activities include those pertaining to the design and construction phases, such as detailed design and procurement (see Chapter 11). Such activities, although critical for achieving sustainability outcomes, are often not covered by a traditional environmental management system (EMS). This chapter outlines two real-life SMSs being used in the transport sector – one by the Sydney Metro Authority (SMA) in Australia and the other by the UK Olympic Delivery Authority Transport Division (ODAT).1 It describes the key components of each SMS and how they have served to embed sustainability in various project delivery activities.
