Adventures of an Austrian trio abroad: the influence of Schumpeter, Polanyi and Hayek in Turkey and the dissemination of their work Eyüp Özveren 8.1 INTRODUCTION A significant number of the more active Turkish economists have in recent years diverged from conventional neoclassical or Marxian economics and become influenced by some of the major names of heterodox economics. They may not yet outnumber their rivals, but they certainly outperform them in terms of publication. Moreover, there is a snowball effect at work as regards their influence upon students. The purpose of this chapter is to trace, evaluate and interpret the influences of Joseph A. Schumpeter (1883–1950), Karl Polanyi (1886–1964) and Friedrich A. von Hayek (1899–1992) in Turkey, illuminating the dissemination of economic ideas across national and cultural boundaries in the longue durée. Turkey has always occupied a middle ground between the East and West, and has served as a bridge for the transfer of ideas and technologies. Turkish intellectual life has always been characterized by a relatively high degree of complexity and heterogeneity. Bearing this in mind, I first present a brief survey of the careers and major positions of these three scholars. Their growing influence in Turkey will then be shown to be characterized by two successive waves: the first during the Keynesian epoch, and the second during the neoliberal era.
