Chapter 14: Training the next generation of social entrepreneurs
When I walk into a college classroom, I like to introduce myself right away: my name is Bill Gates. I’m the world’s richest man, and I’m planning to invest billions of dollars in the best ideas for positive change. Each student will write up a business plan, a proposal for a social venture that will make the world a better place. Those who do the best work will not just get good grades; they may actually receive the funding to realize their great ideas. The ultimate goal is to find – and fund – the next generation of social entrepreneurs, innovators and visionaries: the people who will help to solve the biggest problems of the twenty-first century. Of course I’m not really Bill Gates, but some of my students have gone on to get funding from the tech billionaire and other top investors, venture capitalists and philanthropists. In classrooms across the world, thousands of students are writing business plans and proposals to improve the lives of millions as part of a new educational paradigm: teaching young people practical skills and strategies to make a better world.
