Chapter 1: Developments in the Analysis of the Knowledge Economy: Introductory Comments
Knut Ingar Westeren Background This book is called Foundations of the Knowledge Economy: Innovation, Learning and Clusters. The concept of the knowledge economy is one of the most used in recent economic policy debates, with roots back to the OECD report from 1996 and the Lisbon strategy from the European Union from 2000, but discussions about knowledge as a central aspect for productivity and competitiveness started much earlier. In this book we try to catch the most interesting and relevant aspects of the knowledge economy, which raises the question about focus. The first criterion for selecting the chapters is that they must link to the keywords innovation, learning and clusters. The second is that we must present something new, and the way to look at this is that the contributions shall relate to new studies which present new data and new theory developments. In this book, almost all data collections presented were done after 2005. We have also striven to publish a book with a truly international perspective. The contributors come from 11 different countries in Europe, North America, South America and the Middle East. This underlines the fact that the knowledge economy is a relevant concept in parts of the world other than Europe and North America. How the concept ‘the knowledge economy’ can be defined is widely discussed, see among others OECD (1996), Smith (2002) and Cooke (2002).
