William Wordsworth, Written with a Slate Pencil on a Stone, on the Side of the Mountain of Black Comb (1813) 1 INTRODUCTION Much has been made in late years of the ever-intensifying convergence of economy and culture in modern society (for example, Philo and Kearns 1993; Lash and Urry 1994; Molotch 2002; Scott 2008). The literature on this issue is marked by many different subthemes and considerable disagreement, but one of the more vigorous avenues of research that has emerged over the last couple of decades has focused on regional production complexes devoted to the creation and commercialization of cultural outputs, from film and music to fashion and furniture (Scott and Power 2004). This particular line of scholarship draws heavily on classical Marshallian concepts of industrial district development and regional growth, with their emphasis on agglomerations of specialized but complementary firms, associated local labor markets, and innovative activity (Scott 1988; Storper 1997; Cooke and Morgan 1998).
