Chapter 13: Greenhouse gases reduction strategies for eco-industrial parks in China

As global climate change becomes more apparent, efforts to control and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have become a focus of attention worldwide. Currently, in China 157 national economic and technological development zones have been approved by the State Council (Ministry of Commerce [MOC], 2013); there are also over 1200 provincial-level industrial parks, which account for an increasing proportion of China’s gross industrial output (Liang et al., 2011; Shi et al., 2012), and thus increasing proportional energy consumptions and GHG emissions (Zhang et al., 2010). An eco-industrial park (EIP) is usually regarded as an example of green and low carbon community (Lowe et al., 1997), which seeks enhanced environmental and economic performance through collaboration in the management of the environment and resources. It is a tenet of industrial ecology that such organisational developments, in conjunction with technological advances, can promote both environmental and economic efficiencies (Jacobsen, 2006; Geng et al., 2007) and mitigate local carbon emissions (Jung et al., 2012).
