Chapter 11: How can physical campus planning support universities in their development and ultimately help cities change?
How can the physical framework of our campus be used to improve our university and enable it to fulfill its role? Learning forms and subject boundaries are changing; new demands for sustainability and flexible building structures have emerged. And we are currently witnessing a different interplay between education, research and the surrounding world. These current challenges of universities potentially have significant physical impacts. They will influence target building occupation rates and the number of square meters that are needed, functional attributes of buildings such as the character of the library, the seats in the auditorium and the place a professor’s office is situated. These challenges will also influence the need for spaces for interaction, the search for identity and the entire location, and the appearance a university is given within a city, region or country.
