Chapter 23: Samsung: restructuring, innovation, and global networks
During the last two decades, global economic spaces have been significantly reshaped by the progress of global megatrends, such as globalization, the knowledge-based economy, and the information society. Manufacturing firms have pursued diverse strategies and interacted with economic spaces to sustain growth under the diverse environments brought about by global megatrends. Innovations of new products and processes have been critical in sustaining competitiveness. Networking with other firms and stakeholders has become important for the accumulation of intangible assets beyond the tangibles which were emphasized in traditional industrial location theories. Innovation is important for both manufacturing and service firms (Bryson and Daniels, 2007). The boundary between services and manufacturing has been considerably blurred by the importance of intangible assets in manufacturing.
