This analysis of China’s present and planned nuclear energy development has been included separately, even though the uranium on which it relies is not inexhaustible. The authors have done so because nuclear energy plays such a large part in China’s efforts to provide the energy it needs to fuel its rapid economic growth in a way designed to minimize climate change risks and other fossil fuel-derived pollution, although recognizing the risks of radioactive pollution, fish kills from once-through cooling, and environmental problems with disposal of nuclear wastes.
