If we had written this book some years ago, we might have asked the question, ‘What characteristics and talents do women need to advance themselves as global leaders?’ But the world has changed and despite setbacks, we find numbers of women who are fully prepared for leadership positions in a variety of settings. We have included some of these women in our study.
The women we studied, each of whom comes from a dramatically different background, have a number of characteristics in common. First, each comes from a situation or culture where women do not play dominating roles. This situation could be their culture. For example, there are almost no women leaders in industry in Japan, even though there is momentum to change that. In Jordan women have only recently received equal rights. Although there are many famous Indian women leaders, there are still numerous dangers and threats to women every day both in the large cities as well as in rural areas. In the UK, allegedly the most forward thinking of the four locations considered, only seven women serve as CEOs at FTSE 100 companies, although 26 percent of all FTSE 100 board members are now female (Cohen, 2016; Sealy et al., 2016).
