Thanks to Guy Standing for his talks in Edinburgh and at the University of Strathclyde in 2016, which led me to rethink a couple of the chapters of this book. To Per Koren Solvang and Jaber Gabrium for inviting me to a book launch in Oslo, which helped with my ideas around relational social policy. To my wife for continuing to put up with me, and Emily, Beth and Joanna for being themselves. And to dad, whose death disrupted the production of this book, but reminded me why I was writing it in the first place.
