Chapter 2: Automated and autonomous self-moving/mobility

Following the exposition of automation and autonomy as basic notions for the interpretation of contemporary automated and autonomous spatial mobilities, this chapter will present the most basic modes of automated and autonomous mobilities pertaining to personal corporeal mobilities: human movement automaticity, personal autonomy, and driving. First, human movement automaticity as expressed in individual bodily movements of an automatic nature will be highlighted. This human movement automaticity will be interpreted as the human tendency to perform repeatedly the same movements, either through walking or through repetitive and identical uses of mechanical devices. Some of the psychological and physiological mechanisms and possibly related social norms, which may bring about such habits, will be explored.

The discussion of movement automaticity will be followed by an exploration of the notion of personal autonomy and its contemporary preferred levels by individuals. The very basic need for personal autonomy is psychological, but it is for societal norms and forces to strongly condition the levels of achievement of personal autonomy by individuals. Desired levels of personal autonomy may contribute to the shaping of currently prevailing mobility habits, notably regarding car ownership and driving. These habits of automobility may bring about, on their part, some potential future resistance to novel mobility modes, notably the adoption of the upcoming AVs, since such an adoption of AVs may imply a partial transfer of human autonomous mobility to autonomous and automated vehicles.
