Chapter 7: The geography of intelligent transport and communications

In the last sections of Chapter 6 (6.5–6.9), we explored a variety of implications of AVs for mobility, as well as for individuals, societies, and social values. In this chapter, we will complement these explorations by focusing on the spatial implications of mobility automation in general, and those that may emerge in lieu of AV adoption in particular. Hence, we will attempt to explore some possible future geographical scenarios for intelligent transport and communications systems.

Cities normally enjoy the availability of several mobility modes offered in them, public as well as private, so this chapter will focus mostly on spatial changes within cities, as well as on changes in urban life, following the automation of mobility. As we noted already, in cities of the future urbanites will not drive anymore, and they may alternatively be more involved in the automated transmission of information, notably while riding AVs, and thus possibly using travel time, particularly the daily commuting time, for the performance of additional work, or for leisurely virtual activities.

In the following sections, we will attempt to outline several spatial dimensions for the future intelligent mobility modes to be available in cities. First, we will portray the upcoming multi-level autonomously mobile city, in which all mobility modes will function automatically and at all the three vertical spatial levels: underground, on the ground, and in the air.
