The United States is located in North America and includes Alaska to the north and the Hawaiian islands in the Pacific. It covers 9,372,610 square km (3,618,765 square miles) and is the fourth largest nation in the world. It is 'about half the size of Russia, about three-tenths the size of Africa, about one-half the size of South America (or slightly larger than Brazil), slightly smaller than China, and about two and one-half times the size of Western Europe' (ABC Counlry Book a/the United Stares. 1997).
