Letcher and John Bromley 11.1 MODELLING ISSUES OF INTEGRATED WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT Issues associated with integrated water resources management (IWRM) are generally characterised as being complex, multi-scale and multi-disciplinary in nature. The complexity of these issues has meant that model-based approaches have been one commonly applied method for considering various system components and their interactions. Model development for sustainable water management has come from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, including hydrological, economic, agronomic and ecological perspectives. Models have been used to consider; groundwater and surface water management, resource allocation, water pollution (thermal, nutrients, sediments, pesticides, salinity), land degradation and erosion. Current research efforts are focused heavily on better integration of these different disciplinary approaches to sustainable water management. This chapter provides an overview of modelling techniques used to consider IWRM from three main disciplinary perspectives: hydrological, ecological and socioeconomic. Issues related to the treatment and consideration of spatial and temporal scales in these models are also discussed. Several approaches to model integration and their application to sustainable water management are also reviewed. 11.2 ISSUES RELATING TO MODEL DEVELOPMENT FOR IWRM Integration of models, disciplines and stakeholders in assessment of natural resource management issues has been strongly supported internationally.
