Peter Hagedorn-Rasmussen Innovation is a process of collective sensemaking. Successful entrepreneurs are those who are able to create and sustain networks by careful attention to a process of ongoing sensemaking. This is an emerging and unfolding process which may be targeted toward building a sustainable business concept. Although innovation processes are characterized by a high degree of arbitrariness, they require a great ability on behalf of central actors to translate the emerging business concept as it unfolds. It must fulfill the needs of the anticipated customer; it must fulfill the legal requirements and so on. In the process of translation, meaning is negotiated around the unfolding artifact – and knowledge is embedded in the innovation. This chapter explores how care plays a role in creating sense within a net of actors engaging in entrepreneurial activities. The chapter draws on a case-study which explored the origin of an e-based realtor service.1 The original idea of the entrepreneurs was to develop a realtor marketplace on the internet – a place for sellers and buyers to meet – and a place where profits were moved from the realtors to the users. It was based on a philosophy of a large “E.” However, as will be illustrated, the business concept unfolds, and, as a result, the innovation is translated.
