Chapter 7: Case Study I: KBrandArt – A Story of the Venturing Process

INTRODUCTION KBrandArt is the pseudonym we use to represent this case venture. The case account is about the emergence and further development of a young creative venture in Aurora by a team of five nascent entrepreneurs, who have shared different experiences but similar ambitions in life. In order to conceal the actual names of the people involved the pseudonyms Denise, Charles, Paul, Adam and Luke were used. A pseudonym was also used for the location of their venture as ‘Aurora’. The venture team grew to six people during the course of the fieldwork as they employed a brand manager, Norman, whom they met through networking. The venture team members, Denise, Charles, Paul, Adam and Luke, set up KBrandArt in the city of Aurora in 2001, as a multimedia design and production company, independent from an incubator context. They were all students at the local university, studying different subjects in art and design, such as video, graphic design, and music. KBrandArt was an extracurricular activity that existed separately from their coursework. Their aim was to expand on their already existing activity and develop a real business through a fully-fledged venture, synergising the skills and competencies that each team member had. After just ten months in business, they won the ‘Shell Livewire Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Aurora and Aurorashire’ and were also recognised for their team development by winning the Workforce Development Award.
