(Anthony Synnott, 1993) INTRODUCTION A man squeezes a lemon over a salad he’s making for that evening’s dinner, and an errant drop lands in his daughter’s eye. She flinches, engaging in a behavior before she really knows the nature of what is in her eye, maybe before she even recognizes that something hit her in the eye. She’s simply, suddenly, and perhaps only slightly aware that something, whatever it is, has caused her discomfort. We find another man in another house similarly preparing a salad and likewise squeezing a lemon. This man’s daughter, on witnessing him, makes a face and shudders. She doesn’t like lemon juice, and she wants her father to know it. The difference between these brief sketches is the meaning behind each girl’s behavior. The first girl’s behavior has no meaning. She’s merely reacting, reflexively, to an impulse, perhaps conscious, perhaps not. The second girl’s behavior has meaning.
