Chapter 10: Conclusion: Minorities in Entrepreneurship – An International
review Entrepreneurs have the dynamism to get something started. They view the world differently from other people. They create opportunity that others don’t necessarily see and have the guts to give it a go. (Sir Richard Branson, Chairman of Virgin Group, 2009, p. 259) INTRODUCTION This book has aimed to further contribute to the limited literature on the experiences of non-mainstream entrepreneurs by presenting chapters reviewing literature pertaining to eight categories of minority business owners: younger entrepreneurs, older entrepreneurs, women entrepreneurs, ethnic minority entrepreneurs, immigrant entrepreneurs, LGB entrepreneurs, disabled entrepreneurs and Indigenous entrepreneurs. As mentioned in Chapter 1, we acknowledge that the selection of these specific entrepreneurial minority groups was not comprehensive of all business owner minorities, but their inclusion was determined by the availability (which in some cases was limited) of published research and literature. In this final chapter, we pull together the main themes that have evolved from the various entrepreneurial minority groups in relation to their characteristics and aspirations/motivations for starting up a business, as well as the potential challenges and barriers faced during business venture development. We also summarize the challenges and barriers experienced by the various minority groups, and go on to present predictions for the future development of entrepreneurial minorities worldwide.
