12. Internationalization of life science firms: dynamics in the interaction between networks, innovation and export performance Vandana Ujjual INTRODUCTION This chapter deals with the internationalization of life science (LS) firms. Using an integrative framework of export performance based on the theoretical perspectives of network theory and the resource-based view, the dynamics in the link between export performance of firms and its key determinants are explored through the analysis of various external networks and internal innovation capabilities. The analysis facilitates comparisons of: 1. the extent to which strategic internal and external factors differ in their impact on export performance across different export destinations, and how this differs for life science firms, compared to firms in other hitech sectors. 2. A multi-variate analysis of new firm-level data gathered from high technology sectors in Scotland is used to systematically investigate export intensities in European markets and non-European markets. The model developed here incorporates a range of internal factors (innovation capabilities and firm strategies), and external factors (strategic networks and sources of information spillover), and fills a gap in empirical research by combining these variables to identify key dynamics and determinants of export performance (Lefebvre and Lefebvre, 2001; Barrios, Gorg & Strobl, 2003). The results show that the final export destination modifies the set of determinants, suggesting that specific target export markets require unique sets of capabilities (Lefebvre, Lefebvre & Bourgault, 1998).
