CHAPTER 4 4.1 Data description Country standings The data for each country are presented in the following tables and ﬁgures, which summarize the values of the principal variables and indicators used to construct the sub-indexes and the Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index (GEDI) itself. The data are presented as follows: 1. The ﬁrst table gives the summary statistics for each country. These include data about a country’s economy and demographics, and its position in other well-known indexes. The summary statistics provide the following: ● ● ● ● ● ● ● 54 ● ● ● the size of the population, given in millions; the per capita GDP, presented in US dollars in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP), per World Bank estimates for the year 2008; the country’s level of development, presented in the stages suggested by Porter (2002): factor driven, efﬁciency driven and innovation driven; the country’s rank among 183 countries in the Ease of Doing Business Index for 2009–2010; the country’s rank among 133 countries in the Global Competitiveness Index for 2008–2009; the country’s rank among 179 countries in the Index of Economic Freedom for 2009; the country’s rank in the GEDI, with its score; the country’s rank in the three GEDI subindexes, with the respective scores; the weakest pillar to improve and its value; and the weakest variable to improve and its value. 2.
