Irwin (Dartmouth College) Douglas Irwin was born in Lansing, Michigan in 1962 and graduated with a BA in political science from the University of New Hampshire in 1984 before obtaining both an MA and a PhD in economics from Columbia University in 1985 and 1988 respectively. Between 1986 and 1987, he was a Junior Staff Economist at the Council of Economic Advisers and then spent three years as an Economist at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Between 1991 and 1997, he was an Assistant Professor of Business Economics at the Graduate School of Business, University of Chicago before moving to Dartmouth College where he currently serves as the Robert E. Maxwell ’23 Professor of Arts and Sciences. Professor Irwin’s research focuses on US trade policy, past and present. His most-cited articles in chronological order include ‘Learning-by-Doing Spillovers in the Semiconductor Industry’, Journal of Political Economy (1994), co-authored with Peter Klenow, ‘Trade Blocs, Currency Blocs, and the Reorientation of World Trade in the 1930s’, Journal of International Economics (1995), co-authored with Barry Eichengreen, ‘The United States in a New Global Economy?
