Hilde Behrend (1917–2000) Hilde Behrend was born on 13 August 1917 in Berlin. At the age of 19 she emigrated to Great Britain. She ﬁrst earned her living as a secretary but decided in 1941 to enter the London School of Economics to study economics. After ﬁnishing her studies she took up a job as grammar school teacher of German and French. The deep understanding of the working life of teachers, which she acquired at that time, resurfaces in her later scientiﬁc research when she stresses the motivational differences of workers in various labour markets. In 1949 Behrend abandoned her job in the secondary education system for a position as Assistant Lecturer and Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham.
