Chapter 5: Masculinity and nationhood: cultural roots for the head in the clouds and feet on the ground research in China

This chapter affords an overview of how Chinese innovation policy has evolved since the 1949 revolution, and in particular how conceptions of innovation, learning and change have informed and moulded the understanding of goals and ideals among Chinese scientists and their view on nationhood and service to the nation. In doing so, the author, a leading young scholar on research and innovation in China who was done extensive research on the scientific and innovation workforce of China, affords unique insights into the mindsets and motivations of junior scientists and how they view their role in the modernization of China.
