Chapter 2: Modelling sustainable development
There have been numerous attempts to model physical, biological and socioeconomic systems as well as more elaborate attempts to model sustainable development (Faucheux et al., 1999; Moffatt, 1996; Moffatt et al., 2001). The purpose of this chapter is to describe some of the ways in which sustainable development has been modelled. The following section outlines some of the methods used in modelling sustainable development as an integrated system. This is followed by a review of attempts to develop input–output as a way of dealing simultaneously with socioeconomic and ecological systems in the same accounting framework. Next, some of the approaches to developing dynamic simulation models of sustainable development are discussed. I then describe several alternative future scenarios, some of which are claimed to be sustainable. This then leads inevitably to a brief examination of the competing ideologies underlying efforts to model sustainable development.
