Chapter 13: Information and communication technology use and work–life integration
In December 2011, Volkswagen announced that it would restrict afterhours email delivery to its employees, citing staff complaints that their work and home lives were becoming blurred (BBC News, 2011). Other companies have considered or implemented similar changes, which underscores the importance that information and communication technologies (ICTs) have in today’s workplace. Indeed, media reports documenting concerns about how workplaces, and work, are being transformed by ICT based practices are both prevalent and global (e.g., Davey, 2012; Richtel, 2011; Thompson, 2011). Tensions around work-related ICT use, in particular, have also been intensified by increasing global economic insecurity and the 2008 recession as employers looked for ways to exploit ICT use to boost productivity with stagnant or shrinking staff (Houdmont et al., 2012).
